Pamphlets 994.04

As Australia's first Governor-General, Lord Hopetoun had to appoint the first Prime Minister. Ill-advised, Hopetoun chose Premier of New South Wales, William Lyne, who earlier had opposed Federation. Consequently this selection became known as the 'Hopetoun blunder' and after politicians' protests, leading federationist Edmund Barton was appointed the first Prime Minister. Hopetoun returned to England after a difficult and expensive term of office.
