: 'Australian federation' is the subject of debate on 19 September 1893
Right : Port Augusta, 1897. MLSA: B 21955
Mount Gambier,
1897. MLSA: B 15774
Both Port Augusta and Mount Gambier were forwarded
by their citizens as the best location for the federal capital. Hopes were
dashed when the Premiers' 'Secret' Conference agreed that the capital should
be located in federal territory in the 'senior' colony of New South Wales.
The Canberra site was selected in 1908.
